Although pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. We can choose to be strong. It is not misfortune that produces suffering, but an improper reaction to it.

Even under the worst circumstances, we can choose to focus on the positive rather than the negative. Thomas A. Edison is an example. In 1914, a fire almost destroyed his New Jersey laboratories. Valuable records of his experiments and two million dollars worth of equipment were lost. When surveying the damage, the sixty-seven year old Edison said, There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.

When Hurricane Mitch swept across Central America and parts of the U.S., it left a path of destroyed homes, dashed dreams, and broken hearts. After the storm subsided, birds returned to uprooted trees and began to sing. Isnt it true, as Rose F. Teaching Gmail About Spam

Spam filtering is about striking a balance. It's better to receive all the e-mail you should receive with the occasional spam arriving in your inbox than to have your e-mails filtered to such an aggressive extent that messages from clients and family are tagged erroneously as "spam."

Gmail's spam filtering uses heuristic algorithms to help identify spam. It "learns" what to consider spam when you mark e-mails as "spam"... or when you mark legitimate e-mails tagged as spam as "not spam."

Because Gmail filters spam based on how you tag your e-mails, you should not mark as "spam" e-mail from senders you DO wish to receive e-mail from. And instead of simply deleting spam from your inbox, check the box next to the e-mail and click the "Report Spam" button at the top of your inbox.

It helps if you receive a large volume of legitimate e-mail. This gives the spam filter a good-sized sample to work with and compare to the spam you're receiving. If you receive only a handful of legitimate e-mails a day, plus up to 500 spams a day, it will take a long time for any filtering system to build up enough data to accurately separate the wheat from the chaff.

No spam filtering system will ever be 100 percent accurate.

According to David Cross of Agora Learning: "In my Gmail account, I receive about the same amount of spam each day as you do. Only 10 to 15 spam messages make it into my inbox each week. And one legitimate e-mail a week (like my sister's holiday photos) gets erroneously marked as spam. That's about 3,000 e-mails a week with less than 15 that should have been tagged as spam that weren't and 1 that was tagged as spam that shouldn't have been. That's a 99.995 percent rate of accuracy."

Operation Scheduled Departure, a pilot program by the Homeland Security Department's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, was launched in five cities in hopes that some of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants would deport themselves. An estimated 457,000 illegals were targeted: those who had been ordered to leave, but had not done so.

If they volunteered to self-deport under the new program, they wouldn't be prosecuted for staying.

During the three-week pilot phase, only eight people volunteered to be deported.

"I don't consider the program a failure," said Jim Hayes, in charge of ICE's deportation unit, since the $41,000 effort proved that such programs are ineffective.

The Elephant Trunk Snorkel

New fossil finds have lent credence to the theory that elephant trunks evolved to work as snorkels. The fossils, from a purported elephant ancestor the size of a large pig, were found in an area of Egypt that was made up of swamps and rivers in prehistoric times. Chemical analysis of the fossil teeth showed that the animal lived in fresh water and ate freshwater plants.

A competing theory holds that elephant trunks evolved to serve as a fifth appendage that could reach beyond the animal's tusks.

Branson has always been one of my business heroes from the way he lives his life to the fullest to his business success. I've been fortunate to have the chance to meet many of my mentors/heroes and most of them left me feeling uninspired.

With Branson - it's the opposite. I'm even more impressed and inspired.

In fact, while flying home from Necker I was so jazzed with our time there that I started creating my rules for successful entrepreneurial endeavors. I thought it would be top 10 list but I kept writing and writing in my journal and it came to 34 tenets that I'm calling...

"34 Rules for Maverick Entrepreneurs"

Here is the list:

1. It’s got to be a BIG idea that you, your team and your customers can “get” in seconds.

2. Strive to create 10x – 100x in value for any price you charge. Your rewards are always proportionate to the value you provide.
3. You must charge a premium price so you have a large margin to provide an extraordinary value & experience.
4. Provide a ‘Reason Why’ customers should do business with you and pay you a premium.
5. Get paid before you deliver your product or service.
6. You get to make the rules for your business. Don’t let industry norms dictate how you’ll work or who you’ll work with.
7. Create your business around your life instead of settling for your life around your business.
8. Consistently and constantly force yourself to focus on the ‘critically few’ proactive activities that produce exponential results. Don’t get caught up in minutia & bullshit.
9. Seek to minimize start-up risk but have maximum upside potential.
10. Get your idea out there as fast as possible even if it’s not quite ready by setting must-hit deadlines. Let the market tell you if you have a winner or not. If not – move on and fail forward fast! If it’s got potential – then you can make it better.
11. Find partners and team members who are strong where you are weak and appreciate being paid on results.
12. Your reputation always counts. Honor your obligations and agreements.
13. Never, ever get paid based on hours worked.
14. Leverage your marketing activities exponentially by using direct response methods and testing.
15. Measure and track your marketing so you know what’s working and what’s not.
16. Bootstrap. Having too much capital leads to incredible waste and doing things using conventional means.
17. Your partners and employees actions are their true core – not what they tell you.
18. Keep asking the right questions to come up with innovative solutions. “How?”, “What?”, “Where?”, “Who Else?” & “Why?” open up possibilities.
19. You’ll never have a perfect business and you’ll never be totally “done”. Deal with it.
20. Focus most of your time on your core strengths and less time working in areas you suck at.
21. Make it easier for customers to buy by taking away the risk of the transaction by guaranteeing what you do in a meaningful way.
22. Always have something else to sell (via upsell, cross-sell, follow-up offer, etc) whenever a transaction takes place. The hottest buyer in the world is one who just gave you money.
23. Always go back to your existing customers with exceptional offers and reasons they should give you more money. It’s 5x less expensive to sell to happy customers than go find new ones.
24. However the flip side is - fire your most annoying customers. They’ll be replaced with the right ones.
25. The marketplace and competitors are always trying to beat you down to a commodity. Don’t let that happen.
26. Develop and build your business’s personality that stands out. People want to buy from people.
27. Create your own category so you can be first in the consumer’s mind.
28. Go the opposite direction competitors are headed – you’ll stand out.
29. Mastermind and collaborate with other smart entrepreneurs if they have futures that are even bigger than their present.
30. Celebrate your victories. It’s too easy to simply move on to your next goal without acknowledging and appreciating the ‘win’.
31. Make your business AND doing business with you FUN!
32. Do the unexpected before and after anything goes wrong so customers are compelled to ‘share your story’.
33. Get a life! Business and making money are important but your life is the sum total of your experiences. Go out and create experiences & adventures so you can come back renewed and inspired for your next big thing.
34. Give back! Commit to taking a % of your company’s sales and make a difference. It this becomes a habit like brushing your teeth pretty soon the big checks with lots of zeros won’t be scary to write. If you think you can’t donate a percentage of your sales simply raise your price.

Recently, Google has been up in arms because people are using "google" as a verb. That's all well and good when you're talking about using Google to google something. But when "google" applies to searching on any search engine, they get a little testy. And no wonder. It IS possible for a brand name to become so popular that it slips into the common vernacular... and loses all traces of its corporate identity in the process.

Do you use facial tissue... or Kleenex? And if you blow your nose with Puffs or Scott, do you still call it kleenex?

When you use the copy machine, are you photocopying or xeroxing?

Agustin De Jesus keeps a bed in the back of his restaurant in Lutz, Florida so he can stay the night if he's too sleepy for his half-hour drive home after his 17-hour days.

He was sleeping on the bed at 4:00 a.m. when he heard a noise. He got up to find a man breaking into his cash drawer. That's when he noticed the back door had been forced open, and a truck was sitting just outside it, idling.

De Jesus dashed out the door, jumped into the burglar's waiting truck, and drove off.

The police got two calls: the first was from Leonard Levy who wanted to report his pickup truck had been stolen. The second was from De Jesus, reporting the burglary. De Jesus waited for officers to arrive, then returned to identify the burglar.

Levy, who has at least 20 arrests on his record, whined, "Well, that's the guy who stole my truck!" Police arrested Levy, whom they suspect is involved in several area burglaries, but levied no charges against De Jesus.

When it comes to crime, turnabout is fair play.

Belhus Racing Stables's super looking three year old KILINDINI returns to racing this weekend when he goes to Bunbury on Sunday for a 1200m maiden.

He'll be a couple of stone lighter in the gentlemen's department than when we last saw him, courtesy of being gelded, and hopefully a lot better behaved because of it.

He looked awesome at the trials last week when he settled just off the pace, took up the running turning for home and won as he liked.

I'm sure you have a monthly revenue goal, but does each member of your sales team know what their specific part of that goal is? (Hint -- it's not all equal). Recognize that some reps will produce much more of the overall goal than others, but also make sure each one is clear on what their part of that overall goal is.

Individualize the bonuses or prizes. The problem with most bonus programs is that as soon as they are released, over one-half of the sales team knows they can't win so they are more discouraged than encouraged to produce. Customize each reps bonus based on their individual production goal. This ensures every body has a chance to win and thus will be motivated.

Get out of your office and close some deals. Most managers are way too busy in meetings, or reporting, or just plain hiding out to be really effective. Remember one thing -- as the manager, you are the leader. And leaders lead by example. Want to motivate your team, make your numbers, and create real value for yourself? If you read a recent front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of kilos of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of metres of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her .

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles.

She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around-she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

THE CURSE OF PERFECTIONISM By Dr. Donald E. Wetmore

There's a rule known as the Pareto Principle. It teaches us that 20% of our efforts produce 80% of our results. The additional 80% of our efforts will only yield an additional 20% of results. The first thrust of effort then is the most productive use of our time. The latter thrust is very costly.

For example, let's say you allocate 2 hours (which we'll represent as 20% of your time) to clean a room, a basement, or a garage. Let's say that will you will be able to get it to be 80% clean. It won't be perfect, but it will be acceptable and a job well done. However, to squeeze out an additional 20% of results, to make it "perfectly clean", will require an additional 80% of your time, or 8 hours. The additional results are sixteen times more costly than the initial results from 20%
of the effort, not to mention that while you're trying to squeeze out those additional results, you are kept from doing a lot of other more productive things.

This rule has a lot of application to you as a time manager. Ever notice if you're in sales how 20% of your customers give you 80% of your sales and the other 80% of your customers give you the remaining 20% of your business? Where then should you be spending 80% of your time? With the 20% of the customers who are giving you 80% of your business.

Ever notice how 20% of your relatives give your 80% of your headaches?

It may not always work with exact mathematical precision, but, typically, the small chunk of input yields the biggest chuck of output or results.

Most of us benefit from this rule intuitively. When you and I approach a task (clean a room, prepare a term paper, write up a project, etc.) we decide to put in a reasonable amount of time and effort to achieve a reasonable result. The result may not be perfect but it will be acceptable and this will release us to devote our time to tackling other endeavors.

We put in a reasonable amount of time and produce a pretty decent report. It may not be perfect, but putting in a whole lot more time to make it a little better is not cost-effective and therefore not worth the effort.

Those who suffer from the Curse of Perfectionism do not understand this principle. Their goal is always perfection, which, realistically, is unattainable. For example, you cannot clean a room perfectly. As you clean it, it's getting dirty as dust settles. Any written report can be polished and improved upon with more time and effort. Striving for perfection is then always stressful and frustrating.

Their overall productivity suffers as they spend an inordinate amount of time on a few things, trying to make them perfect, rather than a lesser amount of time on a lot of things that will multiply their results.

The curse is cured when they abandon the need to do their tasks perfectly, when they understand that excellence in performance is attaining a degree of perfection, not absolute perfection. This does not compromise one's standard of excellence in performance. It enhances excellent performance with increased results.

It has now been 3 years since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

As complex as Google's PageRank may be, search experts at Yahoo seem to think it's not complex enough. Based on patent filings, Yahoo is dabbling in ranking algorithms that incorporate more user behavior data in advance of the company's next run at toppling Google's haloed relevance.

Seeing will be believing when it happens, of course, as Google is highly secretive about how its search engine calculates PageRank. If history is any indication, they're already way ahead on behavioral factoring.

Nonetheless, Yahoo can afford the best search engineers in the business (if they can get them before Google does, anyway) and the patent filings shed some light on how PageRank is currently calculated and ways it might be improved in the future.

Bill Slawski, Director of Search Marketing at KeyRelevance, goes into painstaking detail of Yahoo's user data challenges at his SEObytheSea blog. Patent language, especially when dealing with algorithms, can be confusing and dense, so we'll just highlight a few interesting points and leave the lexicographical deciphering to you.

Some Yahoo assumptions about PageRank and flaws associated:

Internal and external links are often weighed equally even though internal links can be less reliable and more self-promotional. Some links, like disclaimer links, are rarely followed.

PageRank ignores that webpages are often purchased and repurposed, decay or become less valuable over time at variable rates.

Current calculations, like TrustRank, are engineered more to combat webspam than to reflect actual user behavior.

Sometimes PageRank deals with links in bulk, aggregating according host or domain, also known as blocked PageRank."

Whenever you misdiagnose a problem you will mistreat it. Thus, when a subordinate is not performing, a leader should humbly look in the mirror before angrily glaring out the window. At your next management meeting, go over these three questions that will help properly attack the cause of poor performance rather than just curse its effect.

1. Did I clearly articulate what was expected and by when? Good people will try hard to hit a standard if they know what it is but it’s difficult for them to be aggressive when they are confused. Just because something is said doesn’t mean it’s been understood. Make it common practice to gauge the employee’s comprehension of the task by having them paraphrase for you their understanding of exactly what you want done.

2. Have I provided the time and resources necessary to complete the assignment? You have every right to expect a task be done well and on time but you have no right to do so if you don’t equip the person for the job. When you don’t provide the resources to accomplish what you want done you set your people up to fail. This is especially true when requiring someone to tackle a stretch assignment of a magnitude they’ve not done before. If all the person has ever done is run around the block and you’re asking him to run a marathon, you’ll need to provide more time and resources"

3. Have I provided the training necessary to do the job well? Not training your people and then expecting them to perform is wishful thinking at its worst. You can’t get the prize without paying a price. Leaders who continually look to withdraw results from their people without making the adequate training deposits are lazy and looking for shortcuts. And just because you stick someone in a two-week orientation training when they join your company and pump them up once a week in your sales meeting doesn’t mean they have the skills they need to succeed. Training isn’t a one-time payment, it’s an installment plan and since the level of your employee’s performance is determined by the level of their practice, you’d best get serious, get committed and get back to work to develop the human capital in your charge.

When things go wrong and people aren’t getting the job done, a good leader looks in the mirror first. Some managers need to step up to the plate here. Too many have a black belt in blame and take the spotlight off their own deficiencies by blaming others. When managers fail to accept this responsibility they fall victim to the old adage, ‘we have met the enemy and he is us.’

Perhaps you feel embarrassed having to ask or perhaps you feel you might be putting your customer in a difficult spot, because he/she may not know anyone to recommend to you. Well, just as there is a process in every step of the telesales call, there is also a process for asking for the referral. It is easy when you know how and then you will have more confidence to do it.

The obvious people to give you referrals are your customers who have recently bought from you. When you call them one or two weeks after they have bought from you, to check they are happy with their purchase, they will not only be impressed that you bothered to call, but they will be only too pleased to assist you.

Mistakes people make:-

The average salesperson would ask, "Do you know anyone else who might want to buy what you have just bought?”

When someone is asked that direct question, their mind goes blank and they cannot think of a single person. You must aim to be more specific.

You firstly establish that the customer is happy with their purchase or with your service and then ask one of the following:-

1. Who else do you know that might want to save the same amount of money you have saved by purchasing this product? (use the benefit here of what your product does for the customer)

2. If you were to substitute yourself as the purchaser of this product/service who would that person be?

3. Mr ____ may I ask you a favour? Could you think of four or five people who sell to you that would be good prospects for my product/service?

4. I am glad you are happy with the _____Mr _____by the way may I ask if you play any sports at all? If no, then ask, what other activities do you do outside of work? Can you think of one person in your (sports) team or in your (activity) group who might be interested in purchasing what you have just purchased?

5. Who else could you help by us telling them about our products or services?

As an incentive for the customer to give you referrals you could say the reason you want their contacts is so that you can send out an introductory package about your product or service with a voucher valued at $50 for their first purchase. You could offer to send this voucher with your customer's compliments, e.g. Mr.____ was so happy with our services, he asked us to send you an introductory voucher with his compliments.

Next, you would ask them for their contacts' phone numbers and ask them if they would like to ring those people to recommend your services or whether it would be okay for you to ring them and mention their name. Obviously, the first option would be the one to go for but you would have to assess how the conversation is going, to know whether you could push for that.

End by thanking them and assuring them you will let them know if any business arises from their referral. This is very important. Why is anyone going to bother to give you referrals unless you acknowledge the outcomes of them and thank them? It is common courtesy to let the person know if their referral produced business for you.

Bye bye revenue

Israel-based IncrediMail saw a big chunk of their revenue go away when Google suddenly ended their existing AdSense and search ad relationship with the web-based email firm.

On October 3rd, 2007, IncrediMail rang the opening bell on NASDAQ. Later, on November 13th, they announced record revenues for the quarter and the first nine months of the year.

But news has emerged from the company that Google ended the AdSense partnership responsible for bringing a lot of that revenue to IncrediMail. Google also turned off the search ads displayed through IncrediMail.

'The Company is currently clarifying the matter with Google and simultaneously exploring alternative relationships, with Google and other vendors,' IncrediMail said in a statement.
That opening bell must sound like a distant, funereal echo now. Shares of IncrediMail plunged on NASDAQ; their previous close of $4.57 has turned into a $2.80 price today, as of press time.

'There is no reason for this move yet and I shudder to think what happened to cause Google to cancel the program,' Aaron Katsman said at BloggingStocks. 'While this is a short-term setback for the internet company, I am sure that it will quickly announce a new partnership.'"

There is a general feeling that businesses do not care and that customer service is a thing of the past.

To bring back the age-old secrets of customer service, start by meeting these three basic customer expectations:

Honesty: As a customer, you want to be able to believe in the product or service that you purchase. If you promise a customer that they will have no longer than a three-minute wait, make sure their wait is less than three minutes. And if you promise that an extended warranty covers everything, make sure that it does. Today's customer wants the truth, not an idle promise!

Time: In today's extremely busy world, customers place high emphasis on their time and are willing to go to extreme measures if it will save them a few minutes. They're willing to pay more or forego customer assistance if it will just add a few valuable minutes to their day. For example, many customers use on-line shopping to save themselves time, even though they may have to pay more as well as provide their own customer service as they navigate through a Web site.

When Siobahn McClintock, 15, ran out of steam, she says, camp director Charles Eugene Flowers, 46, who holds the title of "Commandant", told training assistant Stephanie Bassitt, 20, to hold her down while he tied her up. He then tied the rope to the camp's van and dragged the girl behind it.

McClintock was treated in a hospital, but camp officials wouldn't let her call her mother, who had signed the required consent form.

That doesn't exonerate Bassitt or Flowers, the pastor of a San Antonio church: they were charged with aggravated assault and face up to 20 years in prison.

Galveston County, Texas, District Court Judge David Garner says Bryan Connelly, 34, is the sort of defendant who can "think outside the box."

Connelly, who had been convicted of forgery last year, allegedly wrote letters to two men asking them to kill people involved in his case. The intended victims: his prosecutor and Judge Garner. The two he wanted as hit men: his attorney and Judge Garner.

When confronted, Connelly admitted writing the letters. He only had 11 months left to serve on his forgery conviction, but now he is charged with two counts of attempted solicitation of capital murder.

He may think outside the box, but he'll be in one for many more years to come.

A private security guard working at the federal courthouse in Spokane, Washington, got a lot of use out of the complex's roof-top security cameras, prosecutors allege.

Rather than strictly keeping an eye on security risks, Darin Earl Wanless, 32, zoomed in on a condominium building and a hotel to watch women undress through their windows.

Wanless was turned in by a fellow guard after zooming in on a woman and exclaiming, "We've got boobies!", federal prosecutors allege.

The high- powered cameras are automatically recorded, and at least 22 recordings of women have been found, prosecutors say. Wanless is charged with multiple counts of felony voyeurism and faces prison if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty.

When a pickup truck that Brian D. Kelly was riding in was pulled over by Carlisle Pennsylvania police, the officer noticed Kelly was taping him with his camcorder.

The officer ordered him to turn it off; Kelly did, but he was still arrested.

The charge: felony wiretapping, which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine of up to $15,000. State law specifies no one's voice can be recorded without their consent, but the officer had a camera in his car recording everything too -- an exception specifically allowed by the law. Kelly was jailed until his mother was able to put up her house as security for his bail.

After a national uproar following publicity in the case, Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed dropped the charges. "When police are audio- and video-recording traffic stops with notice to the subjects," Freed said, "similar actions by citizens, even if done in secret, will not result in criminal charges."

Freed decreed that this would be the policy for such cases from now on in his department.

In an email I got today from International Living's Jean Knill says:

A new Newsletter crossed my email inbox today - EEC Info from a likely looking lad by the name of John Rayner.

The story (parable??) was about a Manuscript Speech, a term I don't recall ever seeing before. It got me interested enough to read teh story, and have a look at their website - job done. You should have a look too.

"Years ago, a Kentucky State Senator was delivering a speech in the legislative session. The speech had been written by a disgruntled speechwriter who knew the Senator never looked over the manuscript before he delivered it.

When the Senator got near the bottom of the first page, the script said, “Now the three most important points in this bill are….” He turned the page to see only these words in large print, “You are on your own…I quit!”

That story indicates one of the most important reminders about using a manuscript speech: prepare as carefully as you would for a speech given from notes. There is the misconception among some that since the speech is written, you don’t have to spend much time in practicing—that because your speech is in front of you, all you have to do is read it."

Travelodge Melbourne Update

My stay at Travelodge Melbourne got slightly better... a nearly 4 hour wait saw me summoned by a now chastened Duty Manager who found me in the restaurant and said that a room was now ready. So, after arriving at 6.40am I was able to rest my weary bones at 11am.

I had eaten breakfast though... the $15 buffet isn't bad value but it would have been sweeter if it was complimentary.

Oh, someone must have seen my front desk encounter on Sunday morning because I received a call from the Hotel Manager to apologise for the treatment I had received. I am not sure what happened with poor Mr Jones, who if you are following this saga arrived from Singapore, had paperwork that said he had paid fro a early checkin but who reception said had already booked in as Mr James... that will have to wait for another day.
